A horse's forequarters balance in the gimbal arrangement of the thoracic sling. You can see the sling in action when a horse grazes on the flat or down hill. The horse's thorax swings from side to side as the horse places one foreleg in front of the other, and stabilizes when it dozes while standing head down.
